The Beautiful Black Hills
The fabled Black Hills of South Dakota are an uplifted island of pine-clad mountains rising from the Great Plains. With their impressive pinnacles, mysterious geologic formations and dense forests, the area provides a number of picturesque views, hiking opportunities, ghost towns, National Parks and state parks, and a wealth of history in this region of stark contrasts. The Lakota Sioux tribe called the small mountain range covered primarily by ponderosa pine trees Pahá Sápa, or “Hills That Are Black.” The hills lie between the Cheyenne and Belle Fourche rivers and rise about 3,000 feet (900 metres) above the surrounding plains. They culminate in Black Elk Peak (7,242 feet [2,207 metres]), the highest point in South Dakota.
Whether your group is excited about hiking, history, train rides, buffalo herds, fishing, kayaking, dinosaurs, caves, ATV rentals, hot air balloon rides or just about anything else you can imagine, it’s all nearby.
